Where do we come from? Where do we go?
“The more you know, the more you know you don’t know” – Aristotle
We are all searching for answers to the same questions. Despite all the experience we possess we ask ourselves the same questions. These big questions of life are:
- Where do we come from?
- Why do we get born if we die in the end?
- What is the meaning of life?
- Where do we go?
I have pondered over these questions a lot as well. Especially after negative events in the past we tend to question the meaning of life. Starting with asking a question centers our focus and energy. In that way we will eventually find answers or at least gain interesting new insights. Also I believe to have found a satisfying answer for myself, I am aware of that the answers to these questions differs for every individual. So instead of providing my answer, I want to share some general thoughts.
The past is the past
Our past is not changeable anymore. Although it is important to learn about it to better understand where we stand today, it lies behind us. Instead we can only look at what lies in front of us.
We can go wherever we decide to go
“Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet.” – Aristotle
It is just a matter of priorities and clarity. We ourselves need to define what we want to achieve in life. Then we need to identify actions that help us to achieve that goal and reach the vision we have. Finally, we need to make working on these actions our priority in our everyday life. Instead of watching TV I will read a book about a topic I am interested in. Instead of going out partying, getting drunk and having a hangover the next day, I will focus on achieving my dream; which means finishing this article. It is not that I cannot enjoy these things or that I am have to discipline myself, but other things just have a higher priority.
Life is in our hands
“Happiness depends on ourselves.” – Aristotle
There will be no one coming to our door and telling us what to do to be happy. (You are welcome!) Since we are lazy we expect that things in life will come to us easily. The truth is, we ourselves have to start being happy.
If we want something in life then we need to go and get it. If we are kind to others on the way to reaching our goals, who should possibly stop us?
In order to live a happy life we need to do the things that make us happy on a daily basis. And we need to do them even if nobody else enjoys them or if it is something that is not widely accepted, like for example quitting a job although it means a steady income. In order to get something new we need to let go of what we currently hold on to. No one else can determine what makes us happy. That is why every individual needs to answer the questions of life on her/his own.
